Types of Eye Emergencies

Common eye emergencies we can treat include:

Understanding Medical vs. Vision Insurance

At ClarifEye Family Eyecare, it’s important to know the difference between vision insurance and medical insurance for your eye care needs. Vision insurance (such as VSP or Spectera) covers your annual routine eye exam, which includes a preventive eye health check and updating your glasses or contact lens prescription.

For more specific eye health concerns, like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye exams, medication checks, and emergency eye care, these visits are billed through your medical insurance (such as Blue Cross, Select Health, Regence, or United Healthcare). These services are often subject to a specialty provider copay or coinsurance.

Symptoms That Might Mean an Eye Emergency

While most eye emergencies involve noticeable symptoms or trauma, other eye emergencies are not as obvious. Any sudden changes to your vision should be considered an eye care emergency.

Sudden onset of any of the following symptoms may also indicate an emergency:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Pupils that differ in size
  • Bulging eyes
  • Severe eye pain
  • Double vision
  • Redness or severe itching
  • Bruising or bleeding
  • Sudden headache
  • Discharge from the eye
  • Eyes not moving together

Call our office immediately should you experience any of these issues.
