What Causes Dry Eye?
Your tears play an essential role in keeping your eyes healthy and comfortable. They are made up of 3 vitally important layers: oil, water, and mucus. If any of these layers is disrupted, you can develop dry eye.
Dry eye occurs when your eyes either don’t produce enough tears or the tears you do produce don’t function correctly. The most common type of dry eye is when the tears evaporate too quickly, which is often caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). However, dry eye can have various causes.
That’s why we perform a comprehensive eye exam that includes tests specifically to identify the root cause of your dry eye. This personalized approach means we find more effective treatments to keep your eyes comfortable and healthy.
What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?
MGD occurs when the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of tears, become blocked or dysfunctional. These tiny glands are located along the eyelids and release oil onto the eye’s surface to prevent evaporation and keep your eyes lubricated and comfortable. When they are not functioning properly, your tears evaporate too quickly, leading to dry eye symptoms.
There can be different causes of MGD beyond blocked oil glands, including:
- Age
- Hormone imbalance
- Rosacea
- Autoimmune conditions
- Blepharitis
- Allergies
IPL Therapy & Other Treatments for Dry Eye
IPL therapy uses gentle light pulses to target the meibomian glands to reduce inflammation and bacterial growth.
Over time, IPL therapy can help these glands function more effectively, leading to increased tear production and relief from dry eye symptoms.
We recognize that your children also need dry eye treatment, and our team works with you to find the right option for their specific needs.
What to Expect During IPL Treatment
An IPL appointment generally involves:
- Treatment: We recommend a series of 4 comfortable 20–30 minute sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart.
- Comfort: A cool gel and protective eyewear ensure a comfortable experience. You might feel a warm sensation during treatment.
- Aftercare: Temporary redness is common but fades within a few hours. You can resume daily activities immediately, but minimize sun exposure and wear sunscreen for a few days following each session.
Our staff is always happy to answer any questions you have about IPL therapy.
